Bwindi Forest

Welcome to the Misty Bwindi Impenetrable forest national park popular home to the endangered Mountain Gorillas. The park is situated in the south western region of Uganda and covers the districts of Kabale and Kanungu district. The park was declared UNSECO World Heritage Site that is recognized internationally. Bwindi Forest was gazzated in 1992 with the main intention of conserving the endangered mountain gorilla population that was under the threat of illegal hunting and poaching practices.

Bwindi impenetrable forest national park is worldwide known as the best gorilla trekking destination due to the fact that it hosts almost half of the remaining endangered mountain gorilla population. The park covers an area of about 321 square Kilometers.

The Park hosts about 130 mammals, 230 butterflies, 350 bird species, 20 primates such as; red tailed Mangabey, white and black colobus monkeys, Olive baboons among others. Apparently, the park harbors about 19 habituated gorilla families that are open for gorilla tourism.

Attractions & Activities

Gorilla trekking

Gorilla trekking is the major key activity done in Bwindi Impenetrable forest national park. The park is divided into four sections where the activity is done such as; Buhoma, Nkuringo, Rushaga and Ruhija sector.

Birding

Bird watching experience that is best done in Buhoma sector along the forest Margins as well as in Ruhija sector along the Mubwindi swamp. Here you get sight the rare Albertine endemics such as; African green Broadbill, Grauer’s Rush Warbler, Rwenzori night Jar, yellow-crested Helmet shrike, Blue-headed sun bird, Handsome Francolin among others

Cultural encounter with in the Batwa community villages.

Here you get an opportunity to interact with the local people, learn more about their interesting culture that is exhibited through the organized traditional dances and songs.

Guided Nature Walks

This is the best way to explore the forest and it gives you an opportunity to enjoy a refreshing Hiking. The walk takes you through 6 main Hiking trails that are found in Buhoma sector of the park. Here you get an insight to sight more bird species in the park.

How to get to Bwindi forest national park

 Bwindi forest national park is situated on the border of Uganda and DR-Congo close to Virunga national park in the south western part of Uganda. it covers the districts of Kanungu, Kabale, Kisoro district. The park can be accessed either by road or air transport.

From Kampala to the park by road, it takes you about 9 to 10 hours’ drive covering a distance of about 463.7 kilometers via Masaka – Mbarara highway. The route is long but it offers a fascinating scenic view of the Pearl of Africa landscape along the way.

The park can as well be accessed from Queen Elizabeth national park via the Ishasha sector that is about 4 to 5 hours drive on road.

For Travelers that have issues of sitting in the vehicle for long hours, you can opt for a flight transfer offer from Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi airfield to the park where you land in Kayonza airstrips or Kisoro Airstrip.
